Love What You Do

Recently visiting our dear British friends, Bob and Carol, I was struck by the sentiment Bob dutifully exclaimed each time he walked Carol to the door as she left the house. No matter where she was off to, whether it was to shop for meal ingredients, visit a friend, hop on a bus, or spend the day volunteering in a local school, he always sent her off with the admonition to “Love what you do.” (In his perfect British accent!)

What if we made the conscious decision to love everything we did? As we made our way to work, be it an anticipatory drive or a dreadful one, what if we asked Jesus to help us love what He’s called us to do? As we visit a neighbor or sacrifice our time to help others in need, when we show up for uninvited interruptions in our day, when fearful situations require our presence, when menial tasks must be accomplished, oh Jesus, help us love what we do.

As I head out the door each morning, may I unlock the key to opportunities set before me with the mindset to love what I do. Whatever Jesus has for me, I pray I will hear His gentle reminder, in His reassuring fatherly accent, to go out into the day and “Love what you do.”
